In this Shorty we take a quick look at the life and work of one of our favorite directors, David Cronenberg.
Cronenberg was born in Toronto in 1943. He regularly wrote as a child and had a strong interest in science, botany and lepidopterology, the study of moths, and the 3 super families of butterflies.
He first studied in the Honors Science Program and then switched to the Honors Language and Literature program at the University of Toronto, where he developed an interest in film.
After making a couple of shorts and a few art house films… in 1975: Shivers
And then in 1977- Rabid
Rabid caused quite a stir, given its lead was XXX actress Marilyn Chambers. The star of the classic of 70’s porn Behind the Green Door was already controversial when it came to light that she was the “wholesome” product model for Ivory Snow.
More of our favorite Cronenberg films – no contagion
Including this great Q and A where Cronenberg is joined by Viggo Mortensen!
And speaking of Viggo, we also discussed his work with Cronenberg (some of his best) including A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.
Eastern Promises has possibly the best fight scene scene in the history of film.
WARNING: NUDITY AND EXTREME VIOLENCE
Videodrome
Could exposure to the Videodrome be what caused James Woods to lose his mind?
The Dead Zone
A MUST WATCH before the November 3rd election!
And for the love of Jeremy Irons:
M. Butterfly
Dead Ringers
Two creepy Irons for the price of one!
Besides his directorial achievements, he is an actor as well. Here is one of Elaine’s favorite Cronenberg performances.
