This week we talk about episodes 7 and episode 8 (the finale) of what may be our favorite show this year, Perry Mason!  This episode is chock full-o SPOILERS, so if you haven’t watched S:1 (WTF), then skip this one. We have a Special and a Shorty this week too!

Some of our favorite interviews and extras

Elaine is all about the theme song

Elaine was singing the praises of the original Fred Steiner’s Perry Mason theme song from early on. The closer we got to the end of season 1, the more she heard the original theme under the end credit music. In the finale, there was no mistake about it. Steiner’s theme was loud and clear under the Terence Blanchard end credits. Blanchard also composed music for a number of Spike Lee movies, including Da 5 Bloods, which we talked about in Episode 11, BlacKKKlansman, and Bamboozled.

Here are the original theme from the 1950s-60s Perry Mason and the end music from the HBO series finale. You compare!

Fun fact: The Perry Mason theme is called “Park Avenue Beat“.

We’re not the only ones who love the Perry theme.

And a great (short) interview with the composer Fred Steiner

Steiner also worked on TV shows like Star Trek (TOS), The Twilight Zone (TOS), and Gunsmoke. His film credits include The Night of the Living Dead (1968), Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi , and The Color Purple.

What we know/guess about Season 2

Much to Travis’s delight, all of the original Perry characters are finally in place and will be returning next season.

Here are our predictions for Season 2.

Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys), Della Street (Juliet Rylance), and Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) will definitely be back (since they are all in place!!) and Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham) will be working for Hamilton Burger (Justin Kirk) who will move into the D.A, role.

With Ennis is out of the way, Detective Holcomb (Eric Lange) may be back, and he may have it in for Paul Drake.

D.A. Maynard Barnes is humiliated and pissed off af, but the last we heard from him, he still intended to run for mayor. So we might see the return of Stephen Root, although I think Travis would prefer he devote his time to Barry, and I hope he keeps showing up in Lincoln Project anti-Trump ads!

You can listen to this episode to hear us argue about the fate of Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany.)

At the end of the finale, a new client, by the name of Eva Griffin, enters the picture which seems to be a hint that season 2 may be The Case of the Velvet Claws, the first of the Perry Mason novels by Erle Stanley Gardner and S6: E22 of the original series.
